Anthony Zinonos

Artist Anthony Zinonos' collages are an exercise in restraint. Physically, his oft-published collages consist of little more than a few snips of construction paper, found images, and a scribble or two. Visually, Zinonos limits himself to bold, primary colors, chunky polygons, and thin slivers of paper. These minimalist works are direct without being simplistic.

Should Zinonos layer on too much complexity through wildly varying textures or paper ephemera (as is common in much of the collage scene at present), much of the visual, and conceptual impact of the images would be lost. Brevity is, after all, the soul of wit. And witty, they are! Mr. Zinonos' images are the visual equivalent of a one-liner- clever and compact.

Some of my favorite images are his diptychs, which consist of a found image, paired with Zinonos' interpretation of that image, with its elements condensed to suggest their most basic forms. His pieces often work best when grouped together. One found image plays off another, even as the entire group is unified by carefully selected colors of construction paper.

The sheer amount of Anthony Zinonos' work is vast. In addition to spot illustration, he creates zines, posters, collage journals, and even installations. This is all detailed on his website, his blog, and his flickr (where I first discovered his work.)
